“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1939) is set in 15th century France. In this classic film, Chief Justice Claude Frollo, played by Sir Cedric Hardwicke, wrongfully accuses a gypsy girl of murder. He controls Quasimodo, a deformed hunchback portrayed by Charles Laughton, and instructs him to capture Esmeralda, the object of his obsession.
